Types Of Patio Furniture Print E-mail
Sunday, 26 November 2006

Patio furniture today can be both stylish and elegant while offering all weather benefits.  From traditional wood benches modernized with gliding features to elegant wrought iron tables with woven mesh tops and matching folding chairs, you can find just about any style of patio furniture you can imagine.  However, it is important to think about the quality of your patio furniture, as well as its style.

Built to last patio furniture may cost more, but is a wise investment.  Purchasing inexpensive patio furniture that only offers a season or two of wear can be very expensive in the long run.  It’s best to invest in quality patio furniture in styles and designs that can stand the test of time and endure modern upgrades such as cushion changes, as your own personal style evolves.

Wrought iron and woods are two obvious choices for patio furniture.  They offer classic design options with durability and strength for long lasting wear.  Certain woods, such as cypress and cedar, provide added benefits when left to wear naturally, resisting decay and insects.  Having a quality frame for your patio furniture will help your patio furniture look fresh in years to come.

Aluminum is another popular choice for patio furniture.  Lightweight and moveable, aluminum can provide an all-weather frame that, when coated in other weather friendly materials including hand woven vinyl, can give you the look of natural wicker, but a wicker that lasts through all seasons without fading or breakage.

Of course, there is the basic plastic molded variety of patio furniture made to withstand the elements; however, the mass-produced quality of these materials can sometimes lend to easy bending or breaking.  Another downfall is potential fading or staining.  Make sure if purchasing plastic furniture that it includes UV protective elements and is of commercial grade construction.

Which Type Of Patio Furniture

Your choice in patio furniture depends on a number of factors.  An indoor, screened in, or securely covered patio offers choices that an outdoor space does not.  Outdoor spaces require durable furniture that can tolerate a variety of weather conditions.  Styles, materials, and types of furniture vary, so choosing the pieces that best fit your needs and space can be a challenge.

First, consider how your indoor or outdoor patio space will be used when choosing patio furniture.  Is it a space for lounging and relaxing, dining, or for parties?  Patio furniture is available in many configurations and types, so you will find sets containing loveseats and chairs, with accent tables, dining sets, perhaps with an umbrella for outdoor use, and bars.  Chaise lounges may be a good choice in patio furniture for a more private space, and the traditional porch swing remains a favorite.

Patio furniture is available in a variety of materials.  Wood, metal, plastic, and wicker are all common materials for patio furniture.  Metal, finished with rust proof paint, is often a good exterior choice.  While wood can be somewhat tricky outdoors, well-finished wood is an option for interior or exterior use, as are woods that are naturally water repellent.  Plastic is another option for outdoor patio furniture; it is economical, but rarely as high quality or attractive as metal or wood.  Teak patio furniture is a fine traditional choice for exterior use.  Indoor or well-covered patios are a good choice for wicker or for more heavily upholstered pieces.
