Snow Chains Print E-mail
Sunday, 04 March 2007
Snow chains are traction devices that are placed around vehicle tires in order to increase the vehicle’s ability to maneuver over snow and ice.  In areas that regularly have harsh winters, these chains are normal parts of everyone’s winter equipment.  People who like to engage in winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding also usually carry snow chains with them for those times when they travel to winter resorts.

Snow chains have a very simple design and it is easy to learn how to use them.  They are a set of two parallel chains that are usually linked together with smaller chains or other types of strong materials.  The chains are placed around a tire and the opposite ends are hooked together.  There are adjustable chains that can be fit to different sizes of tires, or you can buy snow chains that are made specifically for a certain type of tire.

When the tire moves, the chain helps prevent it from sliding on ice or snow and lets it do the job it is intended to do, which is to move the vehicle.  Depending on your circumstances, you may want to put chains on all four of your tires, or sometimes only two of them.

When you live in an area that experiences harsh winters or are traveling through such an area in the winter, you want to keep snow chains in your vehicle at all times.  Not only will this help you avoid a potentially dangerous traveling situation, but it is also required at certain times and in certain cases.  If you are driving in an area where a sign is posted that says “snow chains required” and you are caught driving without using them, you will receive a fine.
