Film schools strive to deliver unique values. Most have at least one advantage each, and making a choice can be quite a chore. Prospective students also have their own needs and aims. It is best that you set priorities for your specific learning objectives, and personal situation, and choose from amongst all the film schools for which admissions are available. Your choice has to be made with due care, because film schools have potentials to make major marks on careers.
Many aspiring role players in the cinema and TV industries, perhaps on uninformed advice, interject irrelevant criteria when choosing from amongst the many film schools available. It does not matter whether film schools are autonomous and independent bodies, or whether they exist as departments of wings of universities and other educational institutions. Similarly, the type of qualification you earn, whether a simple certificate, or a degree to adorn a wall, is a poor basis to choose from amongst film schools on offer! Parents and partners will deter you from applying to film schools far from home, but distance is no criterion when your career is on the line! All-round excellence in providing broad exposure to the myriad aspects of cinema and related media, distinguishes the best film schools from their lesser peers. Film schools which have narrowly focused curricula and faculty should not be in your short-list. You will find during your career, no matter which niche you find, that appreciation of film making outside your specialty, is a defining pivot of your ultimate success. |
